For the past ten years, Resource Generation (RG) has engaged its constituents– most of whom are white and age 35 or under –in transformative discussions about class privilege, power dynamics and giving. By providing its constituency with a variety of resources, including a young donor network, education on social change giving, relationships to organizations working for social change, and a supportive staff presence. It has supported and challenged young people with privilege to look at the impact and responsibility of their privilege in all facets of their lives. In an attempt to better represent the diversity of people who have financial privilege both in the United States and internationally - RG is committed to increasing the racial and ethnic diversity of its constituency. To this end, and with the enthusiastic support of the RG staff and Board, RG has created the “CORE” (Catalyzing Our Resources for Equity) initiative. The CORE Advisory Committee is made of a multiracial and cross-class group of activists, artists, young people with wealth, and visionary non-profit professionals. Throughout the course of its inaugural year – the group has collectively dedicated time to creatively approaching and incorporating new and existing constituents of color. Ultimately the goal will be to fully develop best ways to to meet the needs of that new constituency, while advancing Resource Generation’s ability to become a more robust and inclusive organization. The CORE committees is working to build a foundation on which all Resource Generation constituent events and projects can become multiracial and reflect the diversity of the national and global owning class. To accomplish this, we have many goals:
Since its inception, RG has worked to end the feelings of isolation its constituents with wealth experience in society. The CORE committee recognizes that people of color with wealth especially experience this isolation, and we are working to create events solely for constituents of color from the US and internationally within Resource Generation. Using the RG program model, which includes such activities as dinners and time for telling personal stories, retreats and workshops, we hope to create ways for young wealthy people of color to discuss shared experiences as well as differences. As a beginning, we look forward to bringing people of color with privilege together at locations around the country for some good food and fascinating conversations. All RG conversations are challenging as constituents negotiate real world power dynamics. We are aware of the complicated power dynamics that will arise in multiracial discussions where class and race privilege is discussed openly. RG is committed to offering its constituents a respectful and supportive space in which to explore these issues and tools and strategies to process the painful emotions that can sometimes arise in connection to this work. We can make the spaces we create as safe and respectful as possible through acknowledging that we all have a lot to learn from each other and from speaking from our own personal experiences. We know this process will be difficult at times, but believe that it is worth the effort. CORE is about transforming Resource Generation for the better. We believe that a racially diverse constituency will lead to a healthier young donor movement which will ultimately lead to more money and energy being moved towards social change. Our committee is committed to a fun and creative process and hope you will join us! There are lots of opportunities for involvement- on CORE, and on the many projects listed above, and hope you will contact us to contribute your ideas, feedback, and energies.
